J.R. from New York asks:
Do you need to know my pre-existing medical condition before I buy a travel protection policy?

Dan answers:
This information would only need to be disclosed at the time a claim is filed with the travel insurance provider. Typically, a provider will ask for your medical records to determine if your pre-existing medical condition had been diagnosed, had a change in treatment, prescription or dosage, or if medical advice was given or recommended within their “look-back” period, which can be 60 to 180 days from the policy effective date.

Many providers accept “stable” pre-existing conditions. For example, the popular RoamRight Preferred plan’s definition of a pre-existing condition is as follows:

Pre-Existing Condition” means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 180 day period immediately prior to the Effective Date of Your coverage for which You or Your Traveling Companion, Business Partner or Family Member: 1) received or received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment; or 2) took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine. Item (2) of this definition does not apply to a condition which is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 180 day period before Your coverage is effective under this policy.

And remember many plans do offer the “waiver” of the pre-existing medical conditions exclusion clause if the insurance is purchased within 14 to 30 days of your initial trip payment or deposit and you insure 100% of your prepaid nonrefundable trip cost.
