6 Reasons Why You Should Choose Domestic U.S. Travel in 2022

Published: May 16, 2022

Information from Travel Pulse suggests travel could rebound to, and even exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2022. Equally interesting is research from Tripadvisor indicating that domestic trips will be the most popular choice by travelers this year.

If you reside in the continental United States, check out these six reasons to choose domestic travel in 2022. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

Reason No. 1 – Flight costs

With flight costs forecasted to increase, domestic travel becomes more attractive. That’s because domestic trips generally equate to shorter flights that cost less. Also, travel within the continental United States doesn’t technically require air travel at all. Therefore, alternative modes of transportation may be considered and weighed against the cost of air travel to determine which might be the most cost effective.

Reason No. 2 – Convenience

Traveling domestically can be less cumbersome. You don’t need a passport. You don’t need to adhere to any other jurisdiction’s regulations besides those pertinent to applicable U.S. laws. You don’t need to go through customs. You may be able to travel lighter. The list goes on…

Reason No. 3 – Overall savings

Overall, it’s more economical to travel domestically compared to internationally. Research by Rewardexpert.com indicates the average international vacation is 561.6% costlier than its domestic counterpart.

Reason No. 4 – Your country’s economy

Spending local stimulates your economy. It’s a great way to support your country. Plus, since your dollars remain in-country, you benefit as a citizen.

Reason No. 5 – The United States has so much to offer travelers

The U.S. is the world’s fourth-largest country by land and third-largest by population. It spans the gamut from almost tropical to frigid-cold climates. Also, you can experience deserts, mountains, beaches and a myriad of other biomes. Additionally, there are few places in the world as culturally, ethnically and religiously diverse. Nowhere else can you experience such a melding of music, food, fashion, etc. It’s no surprise, we’re called the world’s melting pot.

Reason No. 6 – It’s less expensive to insure domestic trips

Travel Insurance Expert Dan Drennen of Travel Insurance Center® says one advantage to covering the financial risk associated with domestic trips is that insurance premiums are generally lower. “Always strive to get the right amount of coverage for your specific needs,” Drennen says. “Since domestic trips are generally less expensive than their international counterparts, less coverage should be needed, resulting in lower premiums. Also, in most cases your U.S. healthcare provider will cover you in all 50 states.”

Should I insure my trip?

Dan Drennen and the staff at Travel Insurance Center are strong proponents of purchasing travel insurance regardless of whether your trip falls into the domestic or international category. There are so many potential scenarios that would put your travel investment at risk. What if you can’t go on your trip because of an unforeseen event? What if you fall ill just before departure? What if a natural disaster strikes that means a last-minute change in plans? Can you afford to lose your travel investment if something like that were to occur?
