Does Travel Insurance Cover Unexpected Travel Accidents?

T.E. from Oregon asks:
I saw that Dave Goldberg, the 47-year-old husband of Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, died while on vacation in Mexico after a freak treadmill accident. I like to exercise while on vacation, especially at hotel gyms. Would travel insurance cover this?

Dan’s Answer:
Determination of coverage is made when all the facts have been gathered and documented. In this case, I would think the claims analyst will look for things like pre-existing medical conditions (is that why he fell?) or faulty exercise equipment (is the hotel at fault?).

The best thing to do is to look at the exclusions within a policy. I have never seen exercise or exercise equipment accidents excluded in a travel insurance policy.

Had a great experience purchasing trip insurance. The agent was very friendly, helpful, and fully explained the different options. Will be back! - Robert K.
